Loch Methods (Game)

Trolling
Trolling the shore lines from a slow moving boat can be a very effective method! Trolling boats tend to follow traditional routes along the Loch and islands shore lines.
In spring, dyed red and gold sprats and rapala's lures are popular trolling baits. In the summer, Tobys are popular.
Anglers boats normally sport three rods. The outer rod fishes the bait at around 35 to 40 metres, the inner 25 to 30 metres and the poker (the rod directly out the stern) approx 15 metres.
There is an excellent map prepared by expert coarse and game anglers (details on the Contacts page) which shows the trolling lanes of the loch and is packed with lots of essential information on how to fish the Loch with both lure and fly.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing and dapping are carried out from a drifting boat. Fishing is conducted along traditional fly drifts to suit wind and wave direction
For wet fly fishing, cast a short line, trip the bob (top) fly back almost to the gunnels of the boat. Normally three flies are fished on the cast, generally in sizes 8 and 10, depending on the wave. A popular cast would have a Silver Invicta on the tail, Turkey and Gold or Silver in the middle and a Connemara Black on the bob. Other popular patterns are Invicta, Wickams Fancy, Mallard & Claret, Claret Bumble, Mallard and Red, Peter Ross, Woodcock & Mixed, Dark Mackerel, Butcher, Bloody Butcher and Kingfisher Butcher.

Dapping is carried out using longer Salmon rods, with proprietary blow line. Again all the action takes place close to the boat. currently an artificial Daddy Longlegs is popular in sizes 6, 8 and 10, size again depending on the wave size. Another popular dapping fly is based on the Black Pennell on sizes 6 and 8.
