Leven Methods

Popular Methods
In Spring and Autumn the Leven can be a big river and big river tactics are required. The Leven is an all methods fishery (excluding float fishing ), except for a short stretch at the Bonhill Bridge which is restricted to fly fishing only. In big water spinning with devon minnows and flying "C" lures is popular. Worm is also productive.

Fly Fishing

Similarly the increased flows of Spring and Autumn require double handed fly rods of 14 to 16ft, the ability to Spey cast is advantageous. Popular big water flies are Willie Gunn and Tadpoles on tubes and Waddingtons, shrimp patterns tied on trebles consistently produce fish. During summer flows, for day and night fishing, single handed fly rods are adequate. In summer small shrimp patterns, stoat tail and silver stoat are popular. For night fishing the Hugh Falkus Medicine and all traditional Sea Trout wet fly patterns can prove successful.
